Heinz Salad Cream is a classic British condiment created by Heinz in 1914. It’s a lighter, tangier alternative to mayonnaise, made from a water-and-vinegar based emulsion with about 25–50% oil, stabilized by egg yolk and thickened with cornflour. Seasoned with mustard, sugar, and spices, it delivers a sharp, sweet-savory flavor and smooth but runny consistency.The formulation makes Salad Cream thinner and more vinegar-accented than traditional mayonnaise, yet sweeter and more complex than Miracle Whip-style dressings. It went through a threatened discontinuation by Heinz in the 1990s that sparked public outcry, leading to its preservation as one of Britain’s best-loved condiments ever since.Used broadly across the UK, it enhances sandwiches (especially egg, tuna, or fish finger), potato and pasta salads, and even as a dip for fries or pizza crust.
